Green Tree Python (Morelia viridis) (Wamena)
Captive bred and hatched October 2007
Wamenas are a highland variety of chondro known for their propensity to be quite dark as neonates. In fact, some are born nearly black! Their bloodlines originate from the highlands of Papua, New Guinea around the city of Wamena (of course). The temperatures in this region are quite a bit cooler than many of the locales that other chondros originate from. This cooler region has caused the Wamena to evolve a darker coloration, not only as a juvenile, but also as an adult. Adult Wamenas will attain a deep green color with powdery blue dorsal markings. It's also not unusual to see Wamenas develop "mite phase" markings upon maturing. True Wamenas hatch out ONLY in varieties of red, black, or brown. These babies are truly a sight to behold and have endless appetites!
